Advantage Advertising
1988 was an
incredible year. Desk top publishing was becoming all
the rage, and two collegians from Ouachita Baptist University
decided to open a business in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. They
were both juniors and had had untold hours of experience
on Mac Plus computers in the yearbook office.
With nothing
more than a rudimentary business plan, they approached
Elk Horn Bank, and were rewarded with a small business
loan. With 3 Mac Plus SE's, a laser printer, and a scanner,
they opened shop in downtown Arkadelphia, seeking to provide
"quality graphic design and marketing" for small
businesses that couldn't afford big ad agency prices.
Mitch Bettis
and myself ran AdVantage Advertising for almost 3 years
before I left for Fort Worth, TX to go to seminary. Mitch
and a new partner continued to serve the needs of small
businesses for another year or so before Mitch left for
Oklahoma to get his master's and later his doctorate.
Mitch is currently the owner/publisher of the Rio Blanco
Times in Meeker, CO.
Between 1988-1991,
we were able to serve dozens of businesses. At that time,
desk top publishing was still something that "specialists"
did. Little did anyone realize at the time how it would
transition into something that every soccer mom and junior
high student would become adept at.
Today, just
about anyone can do "graphic design" with a
little know-how. However, the niche that businesses like
Noble Design and others fill is providing expertise and
help when companies are too busy to slow down and do it
themselves.
